Buying the right parts is only half the job.
It's something we see regularly. A customer orders new seats, a steering wheel, a set of exterior hardware. Good parts, researched properly, chosen carefully. Then they arrive at the door and the reality of fitting them to a classic Defender sets in. A corroded seat runner that won't shift without specialist tools. A dashboard that's held together by fixings in places nobody would think to look. Wiring that bears no resemblance to any diagram available online.
Classic Defenders are rewarding vehicles to own, but they are not forgiving to work on without experience. The vehicle was designed to be maintained in a field by someone with a basic toolkit, not finished to a high standard in a domestic garage. Getting parts fitted properly, first time, by people who work on these vehicles every day, is what our fitting centre is for.
LUCARI operates a dedicated fitting centre in Rye, East Sussex. Not a general workshop that does fitting on the side when time allows. A specific, purpose-built operation staffed by people whose entire working day involves classic Defenders.
Every vehicle we work on is stored indoors with 24/7 monitored security. That matters. When you hand over a vehicle that you've spent time and money on, the last thing you want is uncertainty about how it's being looked after. We take that responsibility seriously.
Rye is well connected if you're travelling from further afield. Ashford International is 22 minutes away, giving you a direct high-speed rail link to London St Pancras in around an hour and 25 minutes. Several customers have dropped their Defender with us, taken the train home and collected it when the work is done. It works well.
We're also about an hour from Dover, which makes us a practical stop for anyone preparing for a European trip. Getting your Defender properly sorted before you cross the Channel, rather than hoping everything holds together on the motorway through northern France, is an approach we'd always recommend.
If it goes in or on a classic Defender, we can fit it.
Defender seat upholstery and full seat systems, dashboard retrims, door cards, headlinings, steering wheels, exterior hardware, wheels and tyres. Electric window conversions, central locking, auxiliary lighting. Complete Defender builds where the vehicle arrives in one condition and leaves as something significantly better.
We also handle the structural and mechanical work that forms part of a larger build. Bulkhead modifications, body conversions, chassis and suspension work. One thing we've found is that customers often arrive focused on one element and end up having a broader conversation once they're actually here and the vehicle is being properly assessed. That's not a sales tactic. It's what happens when someone with real knowledge looks at your vehicle and tells you honestly what they see.
For single installations and straightforward jobs, the process is simple. You book a time, bring the vehicle in, we do the work and you collect it when it's done.
A steering wheel swap or front seats installation is typically a same-day job. A set of full interior seats with door cards and exterior hardware would be a longer visit, and we'd agree a realistic timeframe when you book rather than giving you an estimate that shifts once the vehicle is on the ramp.
The most useful thing you can do before getting in touch is to be specific about what you want. The quickest route to an accurate quote is to create an account on our website and add the products you're looking at to your basket. Our team can then see exactly what you're working with and price the installation properly, rather than giving you a rough figure based on a brief description.
Larger projects stay with us for as long as the work requires.
We've worked on vehicles that have come from America, Dubai and from local customers who simply want the job done properly and are happy to make the journey to get it right. The fitting centre has the capability and the team to handle everything from a full interior retrim through to a complete vehicle rebuild, and we work through each stage methodically rather than rushing to get a vehicle back out the door.
If you're planning a significant build, a conversation before you commit to anything is always worthwhile. We can talk through scope, material choices, realistic timelines and what order to tackle things in. Some of that conversation will save you money. Some of it will change what you'd originally planned, usually for the better.
This is the part that customers care about most when they ask us about the fitting centre, and it's a fair question.
The technicians who work on your vehicle are the same people responsible for the finished builds you'll see in our gallery and across our social channels. They're not general mechanics who've been handed a trim kit. They've fitted thousands of Defender seats, trimmed hundreds of dashboards and dealt with every version of the corroded seat runner, the inaccessible fixing and the wiring loom that three previous owners have each interfered with in different ways.
Interestingly, the question we get asked most at events isn't about products. It's about fitting. People want to know that whoever touches their vehicle actually knows what they're doing. That's exactly why we built a dedicated fitting centre rather than offering installation as an afterthought.
Call us on 01797 222256 between 9am and 5.30pm Monday to Friday, or use the enquiry form on our Defender fitting centre page.
If you want to browse before getting in touch, the full Defender interior range is on the website. Adding items to your basket before you enquire means we can turn around a proper installation quote quickly rather than going back and forth.
