Ask five Defender owners what colour they'd choose for a full interior retrim and tan comes up more than anything else. It's not just because it photographs well. It's the one leather colour that seems to improve the longer you own the vehicle, which is a strange thing to say about a colour, but it's true.

There's a reason tan has belonged in a Defender since long before LUCARI existed. It's warm and natural and it softens with age rather than looking tired, which matters on a vehicle that's meant to be driven rather than parked under a cover.

Pair it with a classic-spec build and it looks exactly right. Pair it with a more modern one and it still works, which isn't something you can say about every leather colour we offer. In our experience, it's the shade most customers come back to even after looking at every swatch in the range.

Every part of the cabin can be finished in tan. It's all made to fit the 90, 110 and 130 without any fabrication needed on your end. That matters more than people expect. We've found the biggest frustration with generic aftermarket tan trim isn't the colour, it's the fit.

Leather-wrapped grab handles and the smaller detailing pieces are stitched to match the rest of the cabin, which sounds minor until you see a build where it wasn't done and everything else looks slightly off as a result.

Front and rear options run from a classic pleated finish through to a fully diamond quilted design, so the level of detail is really down to how far you want to take it. Anyone who's sat in both will tell you it's a completely different feel, not just a different look.

Warm tan and natural Iroko timber sit well together, which isn't an accident. Our Iroko wood accessories were designed from the outset to sit alongside tan interiors, from a steering wheel rim through to trim detail. The two materials age at roughly the same rate too, which keeps a cabin looking consistent for years rather than just for the first summer.

The cubby box gets a padded lid and cup holders as standard. It's one of those parts that earns its keep on longer trips more than it gets credit for. Interestingly, it's also one where fit matters more than people expect. Positioned wrong, a cubby box ends up fouling the handbrake or gear lever, or rattling loose over rough ground. Done properly, in Iroko or leather to match the rest of the cabin, it's a small upgrade that finishes the interior rather than just adding storage to it.

Full leather door card sets tie the cabin together properly. It's easy to assume this is a small finishing touch, but door cards cover more visible surface area than most people realise once they're actually looking at the finished vehicle. Retrimmed dash tops and full dash kits round out the fascia in the same way. Not everyone agrees dashboards need the same attention as seats, but it's usually the first thing a passenger's hand lands on, so we treat it that way.

Every panel is cut, trimmed and stitched at our workshop here in Rye, East Sussex, in genuine leather, to the millimetre. One thing that surprises customers is how much of the process is still done by hand rather than on a machine, particularly around stitched detailing and anything with a curve in it.
