In our experience, customers come to steel wheels for one of two reasons. Either they're restoring something closer to the original spec, or they want a look that reads as purposeful rather than polished. Both are valid and we don't push people one way or the other.

 

One thing that surprises customers is how much offset changes the stance of the vehicle before you've touched anything else. Get it wrong and even the right wheel can look tucked in or, worse, foul the arch under compression. Get it right and the wheel does most of the visual work on its own.

The 16" runs an ET0 offset and is built to take a 265 tyre right out to the edge of the arch. It's the classic proportion most people picture when they think of a Defender on steel, chunky without pushing past the wheel arch line.

Step up to the 18" and the offset moves to ET10, which allows for a 265 or 275 tyre depending on preference. Not everyone realises this, but that ET10 offset also buys clearance for a big brake kit, which matters if you're planning any upgrades to the braking setup down the line. It's worth thinking about that early rather than fitting wheels first and running into clearance issues later.

All LUCARI Classic Steel Wheels are available in three finishes, satin black, cream and white. Satin black is the one we fit most often, it suits the widest range of body colours and doesn't compete with other trim. Cream and white lean more heavily into a retro look and tend to get chosen when the rest of the build is already going down that route, matching bodywork or interior tones.

It's easy to assume all Defenders can take the same wheel, but that's not quite right. The Classic Steel Wheel range is built for Defenders up to 2016. If you're running a new shape Defender from 2020 onwards, this isn't the right fit and it's worth checking before you order rather than after.

 

A few honest questions worth asking yourself before you order:

 

• Are you restoring toward original spec, or building your own look?
• What tyre size are you running, or planning to run?
• Do you have brake upgrades planned, even ones you haven't committed to yet?
• Does your Defender predate 2016, or is it the new shape?

Not everyone agrees on which size looks best and that's fine, it's a genuinely personal choice. What matters more is getting the offset and tyre combination right for your specific vehicle so the wheel does what you want it to visually and practically.
